In 2013, the Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute (JITRI) was founded as a bold new experiment. It serves as a testing ground for a new research management system designed to fuel industrial innovation and bridge the gap that can exist between technological discovery and industrial application.
JITRI’s goal is to build a sustainable innovation ecosystem in Jiangsu Province by connecting national and international academic innovation resources with the demand drivers of the manufacturing industry, and by establishing independent research institutes that act as engines of transformational research. These institutes are encouraged to be responsive to industry needs, thereby bridging the notorious “funding valley of death” that lies between applied research and commercialisation.
By the end of 2019, JITRI had established a total of 52 research institutes specialising in advanced materials, energy and environmental protection, information technology, advanced manufacturing and biomedicine, employing around 8,000 R&D personnel. One hundred and fourteen world-class technology project managers and 131 JITRI researchers had been recruited, and the JITRI network included a talent pool of more than 1,000 high-level experts.
Around 4,500 technologies had been developed, and over 10,000 Jiangsu enterprises had been supported by the growing JITRI ecosystem. More than 700 new start-ups had already emerged from the JITRI testing ground. Indeed, one of the key performance indicators for JITRI institutes is the revenue they generate from commercialised technologies and the volume of their cooperation with industry.
JITRI is willing to assist overseas companies interested in exploring the possibility of establishing a new technology R&D centre in China. Funding, laboratory space and talent will be provided to support the incubation of new technologies.
